About the Founder

Marlene Smith is private pilot who has worked in the aviation sector since 2010. Her first business takes used avionics removed for upgrade in countries where other equipment is required, and brings it back to the United States where it had originally been manufactured to be re-certified and resold. In line with this business she speaks several languages and travels frequently by airline. Having a healthy appreciation for aviation's ability to connect people, starting The Surf Bag has become a way for her to give back. By repurposing life vests that would otherwise end up in the trash, The Surf Bag helps airlines to reduce their waste and therefore their environmental impact. She believes that positive change can be achieved by many people taking small steps such as choosing products made from repurposed materials over products made from new plastics.

About The Company

At The Surf Bag, we are committed to reducing the demand for new plastic products by repurposing a material that would otherwise contribute to global waste.  Air travel fosters global relationships, overcoming natural barriers to connect people and supports economic growth.  We want to help support the aviation industry in their commitment to reducing their CO2 footprint.  By buying The Surf Bag you too can contribute to a greener planet.

About the Product

We offer small waterproof bags for outdoors and water-sports enthusiasts.  Although our material is repurposed, we value quality and durability.  Our waterproof key bags are IP rated so you can trust that they'll perform when you need them most.

The Surf Bag is made in the USA from USA made materials. The original life vests are manufactured by several companies along the East Coast. The TRU® Zip self-healing zipper is manufactured in Minnesota. The marine-grade stainless steel grommet is from Stimpson in Florida. And even our The Surf Bag / Think Blue hang tag is made from recycled material by EarthPack in California. The Surf Bag itself is manufactured in California, and will soon be adding manufacturing in Washington State!

Small Steps, Big Change

The existence of our surf bags demonstrates the commitment of our airline partners to pursuing a CO2 neutral future. Together, we are reducing waste in aviation and making a difference one life vest at a time.
